The position is responsible for supporting the learning of math students individually and in small groups, collaborating and consulting with lead and support teachers about best practices in teaching mathematics, and staying abreast of current research and best practices in mathematics instruction. As a math specialist, this entails creating a classroom environment favorable to learning and personal growth of every student; establishing effective rapport with students; motivating students to develop skills, attitudes and knowledge needed to provide a good foundation in math; and to establish good relationships with parents and with other staff members. These students receive instruction from the Math Specialist in small-group, in-class, or one-on-one support sessions. Depending on individual student needs, components of different math programs or methodologies are utilized including, but not exclusive to Singapore Math.

Essential Functions
• Develops lesson plans and supplementary materials compatible with the division’s basic instructional and philosophical standards
• Conducts individual and small group instruction in order to adapt math instruction to the needs of each student and subgroups of students
• Collaborates with other teachers on math planning for their groups
• Translates lesson plans into learning experiences to effectively and actively engage students
• Guides students to know their own profile and to advocate for their learning needs
• Provides support and continued coaching in the area of math for new and veteran teachers by modeling lessons, conducting observations and facilitating conversations, periodically delivering training, and helping find appropriate outside professional development
• Conducts individual diagnostic assessments of students and provides staff and parents with a summary of findings and implications for instruction
• Works collaboratively with the teaching team on behalf of students, and seeks the ideas, feedback or advice of colleagues as an integral part of effective planning
• Integrates current technologies, media and other tools into instruction
• Assists in the evaluation and purchase of supplemental materials to support the math program
• Establishes and maintains standards of student behavior through relationship, positive reinforcement and support
• Evaluates and documents academic and social growth of students, and keeps required records
• Communicates regularly and thoroughly with parents or guardians through conferences and other means to discuss student progress and to provide guidance in supporting their child’s math development
• Participates in K-12 math committee and collaborates with LS and MS math specialists
• Supervises and monitors students in class and during transitions so that students are safe physically and emotionally
• Models nondiscriminatory practices in all activities
• Performs other duties as assigned

Qualifications
• Bachelor’s degree required
• Advanced degree and 3-5 years of classroom experience preferred
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills
• Demonstrated leadership and facilitative skills
• Desire to plan and work collaboratively on a team is essential
• Ability to differentiate instruction, including working with students with learning differences, and the skill and willingness to adjust to student understanding and misunderstanding
• Experience with modeling math concepts, manipulatives, and technology that supports math learning with young children
• Experience with Singapore Math preferred
• Familiar with math assessments (informal and formal)
• Displays proficiency in all related computer applications, including; Mac OS, Apple iOS, Microsoft Office programs, email and Internet, and Google Apps for Education Suite, experience with assistive technology is a plus
• Flexible teaching background and interest in teaching electives, coaching and/or advising clubs is a plus
