Brief Job Description
The Lower Years School Counselor works in concert with classroom teachers, administrators and parents in nurturing a culture that promotes healthy social/emotional growth and development. The counselor establishes and implements the Lower Years (PK-5) counseling program in keeping with school’s core values. At varying times, working with individuals, groups and whole classrooms, the counselor helps to build children’s awareness of self, others and the world around them. EQ skills are focused on including self-advocacy, decision making, labeling feelings, distinguishing between thoughts and feelings, etc. The school follows the tenants of Positive Discipline. The counselor provides training to teachers and parents in the Positive Discipline approach. The counselor leads ADL’s No Place to Hate initiative as well. The counselor works with parents, teachers and school administrators on a wide range of social and emotional issues

The ideal candidate will have a master’s degree in School Counseling; experience working as a School counselor with children ages 3-10; a track record of excellent work with students, parents, and administrators; experience implementing a Positive Discipline approach; a thorough understanding of children’s development; and has excellent collaborative, interpersonal, speaking and writing skills.
The Lower Years School Counselor should have the ability to work both collaboratively and independently, have a commitment to developing the potential of students; and a willingness to be an active, involved member of the school, understanding and connecting with the school’s mission and vision.
