Description:

The School Nurse is responsible for developing, implementing, and managing the health program of High Meadows School (9.5 months) and High Meadows Camp (2.5 months). Salary range: $50,000-$60,000 Exempt

Specific Accountabilities include (but are not limited to):
• Provide first aid, nursing care, and medical services as needed to students and according to physician prescribed care and treatment orders.
• Provide first aid to faculty/staff and visitors.
• Complete an Incident Report for significant injuries/events/emergencies, and notify parents/guardians (and teachers as needed).
• Document assessment data and nursing actions into software system, and contact parents.
• Collect/process students’ daily/as needed/emergency medications, and ensure necessary paperwork is completed. Administer/assist students in taking these medications. Distribute parent provided student emergency medication to homeroom teachers.
• Administer/assist students/faculty/staff in taking stock over-the-counter (OTC) medications per specific instructions outlined in the Health Center Policies, Procedures, and Standing Orders Manual.
• Teach/certify staff in Heartsaver First Aid/CPR/AED for both camp staff and school faculty/staff.
• Provide in-service education on Bloodborne Pathogens, anaphylaxis, and epinephrine auto-injector use to faculty/staff annually.
• Provide guidance, counseling, and education to students, parents, and faculty/staff as necessary.
• Maintain automated external defibrillators on campus. Obtain and maintain stock epinephrine auto-injectors and albuterol inhalers.
• Inventory, obtain, and maintain necessary medical supplies and equipment. Manage Health Center budget.
• Assemble first aid “go-bags” and create student health concerns lists for distribution to all homeroom and connections teachers, Head of School, Lower Years Principal, and Middle Years Principal.
• Assemble first aid fanny packs and prepare student medical contact cards/health concerns lists/OTC medication consent lists/emergency medications for off campus trips.
• Provide in-service education to lead field trip faculty/staff on administering OTC medications to students during off-campus trips.
• Uphold regulations and laws related to confidentiality, reporting of child abuse and neglect, and other health related requirements.
• Stay up to date with federal, state, and local laws and regulations affecting the delivery of school health services, and implementation thereof for the school.
• Revise/create documents and policies related to Health Center.
• Obtain/review/implement individual health care plans and emergency action plans for students with significant health issues at the start of each new school year. As appropriate, disseminate information from care plans to faculty/staff.
• Collect, review, and maintain health physical forms, Georgia Department of Public Health Forms 3300, 3231, and 2208; and cumulative medical documents annually. Maintain a cumulative permanent school health record for each student.
• Perform immunization audit within the first 30 days of school and throughout the school year.
• Implement communicable disease control through exclusion and readmission of students in connection with certain contagious/infectious illnesses
• Collect and analyze data to identify trends in illnesses and injuries, and recommend appropriate mitigation strategies.
• Collaborate with students’ health care providers and parents, school faculty/staff, and community health agencies to ensure access and continuity of care for students.
• Comply with any reasonable verbal or written directive of the Head of School, Camp Director, or other appropriate administrator.
• Arrange and prepare for substitute nurse when absent.
• Attend monthly staff meetings and others as determined by the Head of School or supervisor
• Update nursing knowledge and skills through professional development, conferences, courses, and other professional resources.
• Other duties as assigned by Head of School.

Required Qualifications
• Bachelor’s degree in nursing from an accredited college or university, and current, unrestricted Georgia license to practice as a Registered Professional Nurse. Practice within the Georgia Registered Professional Nurse Practice Act and Georgia Board of Nursing rules and regulations.
• Must enjoy working with children and be able to work well with others in displaying caring, warmth, sympathy, and great verbal and written communication skills with both children and parent/guardians.
• Must understand the developmental levels of the pediatric population Pre-K–8th grades.
• Certified American Heart Association BLS instructor or be able to obtain within first 90 days of employment.
• Must have strong assessment skills and ability to apply critical thinking skills in rendering solutions to various issues while working autonomously.
• Must be organized, thorough, and be able to manage multiple tasks and responsibilities.
• Experience in maintaining medical records and ability to learn and master student information software such as Blackbaud and GRITS.
• Ability to read, analyze, and interpret legal documents and common scientific and technical journals.
• Ability to understand common inquiries or complaints and to clearly and effectively respond and present information to children, faculty, staff, parents, and health care providers.
• Ability to cooperate with school personnel in identifying and meeting physical, emotional, and social needs of students.
• Proficient with Microsoft Office and Outlook.

Preferred Qualifications
• Member of Georgia Association of School Nurses and Association of Camp Nursing preferred.
• School Nurse experience.
• Previous pediatric or public/community health nursing experience.
• Proficient in GRITS software.
