The Mount Vernon School seeks an innovative educator to join our school of inquiry for the 2020-2021 school year and report directly to the Head of Upper School. This individual will work with colleagues within STEM and other disciplines to develop authentic, interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary, inquiry-based learning experiences.

All faculty members will serve as an advisor and will contribute to the broader life of the School through coaching and/or sponsoring extracurricular programs. Ability to teach Biology, Environmental Science and Physics/AP Physics, is preferred. Also, ability and desire to integrate with maker, design, and engineering spaces is a priority.

Role & Responsibilities

Knowledge of the curriculum of courses being taught and of those throughout the science program
Create well-planned six week units with a focus on problem solving, and application
Collaborate across disciplines regularly to create rich, project-based learning experiences for students
Maintain accurate and comprehensive records of each student's performance and progress
Nurture the social and emotional needs of each student
Provide effective and timely verbal and written communication with parents pertaining to a child's progress and needs as well as general information (through phone calls, newsletters, conferences, and progress reports)
Maintain a collaborative, flexible and interactive learning environment and culture for all students
Collaborate with colleagues in lesson planning as well as work on school wide goals
Actively seek out and participate in professional growth opportunities within the school and beyond
Create differentiated learning opportunities to match the needs of each student
Serve as a member of one of our Research, Design and Iteration teams working toward school wide goals
Fulfill duties as assigned (e.g. lunch, enrichment and carpool)
This individual should:
Be curious and collaborative educators dedicated to facilitating and encouraging the growth of students and colleagues through inquiry-based and project-based learning.
Provide meaningful instruction in Upper School Science courses using a variety of research-based and innovative teaching methods
Collaborate with faculty across disciplines to facilitate interdisciplinary and project-based learning experiences
Possess strong character with an absolute drive for excellence, a team-oriented spirit, and a commitment to meeting the academic and social needs of students
Demonstrate a high level of competency in multiple Mount Vernon Mindsets (e.g. Creative Thinker, Solution Seeker, Ethical Decision-Maker, Innovator, Collaborator, Communicator).
Minimum requirements include a Bachelor's degree in Science or related field, teaching experience, and proficiency with technological tools and platforms.
