Description:
The assistant teacher assists the lead teacher in delivering instruction, supervising students
within and outside the classroom, and helps with other supportive tasks. Assistant teacher
applicants should be excellent collaborators with students, faculty, parents/caregivers and also
be able to work independently to support student success. FSA’s classrooms are inclusive and
the student body represents a broad spectrum of learning styles. This role includes active
participation in elementary school life, including lunch and recess duties, supervising field trips,
and attending some student events. The teacher will also contribute to the school community
through admissions-related events and regular student progress reporting. Attendance at
several after-school and evening activities is required throughout the year.
Essential Tasks and Responsibilities:
● Teaching:
○ Supports the lead teacher in carrying out a program and curriculum that aligns
with the Friends School philosophy. This includes morning meetings, whole and
small group work, story times, songs, games, and other learning activities and
projects.
○ Creates materials for learning activities as assigned by the lead teacher.
○ Meets at least weekly with the lead teacher to understand the curriculum and
activity plans, expectations for creating and gathering materials, and roles in the
delivery of instruction for the following week.
○ Supports the needs of an inclusive classroom.
○ Implements a behavioral policy within the classroom in alignment with
Responsive Classroom.
○ Supports a cooperative and non-competitive classroom environment.
○ Provides input to support the lead teacher in completing skills checklists and
narratives for student reports.
○ Participates in all parent conferences and communicates with parents as needed.
○ Works with the lead teacher to share, as appropriate, supervision of students
before, during school including recess, lunch, restroom breaks, arrival and drop
off times.
○ Provides for the safety, care, and education of the students entrusted to
him/her/them.
○ Attends full faculty meetings, levels meetings, and required professional
development.
○ Takes initiative in teaching support areas, such as:
■ Organizing classroom materials
■ Creating and preparing assigned materials for learning activities
○ In the event of an absence, secures a substitute, provides sub plans, and
communicates with the lead teacher and AHoS.H
○ Use and augment published curriculum materials to align with the school’s
mission and educational philosophy
○ Foster a learning environment that supports students’ social, emotional, and
academic growth
○ Use a variety of assessment tools to evaluate student progress and adjust
instruction accordingly
○ Communicate effectively with parents and caregivers about student progress
through emails, conferences, newsletters, grade reports, etc.
○ Maintain accurate and timely student records
● Community Engagement:
○ Champion initiatives that promote inclusivity, diversity and social justice within
and beyond our school walls.
○ Support parent/family community events (e.g., Back to School Nights,
conferences, admissions events, etc.)
○ Model and promote expectations aligned with the school’s values and Quaker
ethos
○ Collaborate with colleagues to support interdisciplinary learning and school
initiatives
● Additional Responsibilities:
○ Supervise and engage with students during lunch, recess, and transitions
○ Chaperone field trips and special events
○ Participate actively in professional development and continuous learning
opportunities

Qualifications
● Educational and Experience:
○ Bachelor’s degree in the subject or related area required;
○ A minimum of two years of teaching experience preferred, preferably at the
elementary school level
○ Experience with multi-sensory instruction and differentiation in elementary grades
instruction.
