The Middle School Physical Education Teacher & Coach is responsible for delivering a comprehensive physical education program that supports the development of students’ physical literacy, teamwork, and overall well-being.

In addition to classroom instruction, this position includes coaching responsibilities within Westminster’s athletics program, including serving as an Assistant Varsity Football Coach and coaching at least one additional sport based on program needs and candidate experience.

This role contributes to students' educational and co-curricular experience by promoting skill development, sportsmanship, and character in both the classroom and athletics.

Position Status: Salaried, exempt, full-time, 10-month

Work Hours: Typical hours are 7:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., Monday through Friday. Some weekend and evening work may be required.

REQUIREMENTS AND QUALIFICATIONS

The requirements below outline the knowledge, skills, and abilities expected of a successful candidate.

A strong academic background in Middle School Physical Education and/or related field(s)
A general undergraduate degree
Demonstrated success in coaching football and working with athletic teams and staff
Deep understanding of the developmental and learning needs of Middle School children
Commitment to 21st-century instructional strategies and familiarity with National Standards for K-12 Physical Education
Experience developing classrooms and curricula that further Westminster’s commitment to equity and inclusion
Proficiency with a range of technologies and the ability to use them to enhance teaching and learning
The desire to continue learning by reading and implementing ideas from professional journals, attending workshops and conferences, taking courses, and collaborating with colleagues
Strong communication and organization skills

Preferred Qualifications

Advanced degree in Physical Education or related discipline
Two or more years of Middle School teaching experience
Experience in an independent school environment
Ability to contribute to multiple athletic programs

ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES

Instruction & Curriculum Development
Designs and implements a developmentally appropriate physical education curriculum aligned with school standards
Teaches four sections of Middle School PE classes of boys and girls with a team of twelve other physical educators across three divisions
Co-teaches a 2-week immersive, interdisciplinary class during MayATL
Promotes physical fitness, teamwork, and lifelong wellness habits
Fosters a love of movement, teamwork, and lifelong fitness in young learners.
Utilizes various teaching methods and instructional strategies to engage students with diverse learning styles and abilities.
Assesses and monitors student progress, providing feedback to students and parents as needed.
Integrates character education, leadership, and sportsmanship into daily lessons.
Classroom & Student Management
Creates a positive, inclusive, and safe learning environment for all students.
Establishes and maintains clear expectations for student behavior and participation.
Ensures proper supervision of students at all times to promote safety and well-being.
Coaching Responsibilities
Serves as Assistant Varsity Football Coach, supporting all aspects of Westminster’s robust athletic program
Coaches at least one additional sport (non-Fall Season), as assigned
Plans and conducts practices, prepares for competitions, and supports athlete development
Promotes sportsmanship, teamwork, and student-athlete well-being
Collaborates with Head Coaches and Athletics staff to support program goals
Supervises student-athletes during practices, competitions, and team activities
Supports school-wide physical activities, including field days, after-school programs, and special events.
Collaboration & Community Engagement
Works closely with fellow PE teachers, classroom teachers, and school staff to support interdisciplinary learning.
Communicates effectively with parents and caregivers regarding student progress and physical education programming.
Serves as a coach or sponsor for extracurricular athletics or wellness programs as needed.
Actively participates in faculty meetings, committees, and school events to support the broader community.
Engages in professional development opportunities to remain current in best practices in physical education and child development.
Program Operations Responsibilities
Maintains accurate records of student performance and participation.
Ensures equipment and facilities are properly maintained and comply with safety standards.
Contributes to the broader school community
Follows all school policies and procedures regarding student health, wellness, and emergency preparedness.
Perform other duties as assigned

PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORK ENVIRONMENT

While performing the duties of this position, the employee is required to sit; stand; walk; use hands to finger, handle, and feel objects, tools, or controls; reach with hands and arms; climb stairs; balance; stoop, kneel, crouch, and crawl; talk and hear; engage in moderately strenuous physical activity both indoors and out. The employee may occasionally lift or move up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this position include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus. The ability to become certified in CPR, AED, and First Aid is required.

While performing the duties of this position, the employee is occasionally exposed to outdoor weather conditions and frequently walks on slippery or uneven surfaces. The noise level in the work environment is often loud.

Westminster is a drug-free, smoke/vape-free campus.

TRAVEL

Travel is primarily local during the regular business day. Overnight and out-of-area travel may also be required and is associated mainly with planned events, conferences, and professional development opportunities.

Driving a Westminster vehicle may be required for this position.
